School Visits — Booking Information
My standard school presentation lasts 60 minutes. I spend 30 minutes talking about how and why I write my books; how I do the research; and then I focus on the writing process, with special emphasis on editing and re-writing. I also share photographs and anecdotes about the people, places, and animals featured in my books. I take questions for about 15 minutes, and leave 15 minutes at the end to autograph and personalize books for students who want to purchase their own copies.
My school visit is much more meaningful for the students if they have read one of my books before I present. Schools may purchase my books at a discount price when ordered directly from me using the Discount Order Form for Schools. A copy of the school’s Tax Exempt Certificate should accompany the order. Often students want to purchase their own copies, as well. These books may be pre-ordered and I will autograph and personalize them for each student. I have a form that can be sent home to parents in advance of my visit.
“Every year I invite Mrs. Wood to my school for an author visit. The students are always so excited to meet her. She speaks to the children about the writing process and the topics in her books. Her visit is always a highlight of the year!”
“I read the book Voices in St. Augustine by Jane Wood. It was a fun adventure/mystery book about a boy who needs to do a project about Florida. It is engaging and a book that you won’t be able to put down. It is a good level for all and super fun to read. It teaches you about St. Augustine while you get a little fiction too.”
“Being able to have Mrs. Wood as a guest speaker was like the icing on the cake. Hearing her speak about what inspires her to write and seeing pictures of where she conducts her research was motivation to even the most reluctant readers to pick up her books and give them a try.”
“I think I speak for all the 4th grade students and teachers, when I say thank you for your amazing ‘visit.’ I even thought Zooming with you was even more personal and seemed more meaningful for some reason. The students got so much out of it and learned so much about your books and the writing process. The students LOVED it! Even saying, ‘this is the best day ever.’ ”
“Oh, my goodness, my students are obsessed! We do a book talk every morning and four of them are reading Jane Wood’s books and they tell me they “can’t put them down.” They really enjoy the interactions between the characters! I am so grateful that we were able to connect with her through Skype. I feel she has truly made a difference in my students’ lives!!”
“It’s a powerful moment when you see children make a connection between the words on the page and the author who brought them to life. It’s one thing for kids to read books, but the chance to meet the author and hear what it’s like to write a book, that’s an experience they’ll remember for a lifetime.”
